Halloween Decorations

Apart from the normal Halloween party decorations there are a few other options to add a little more ”scare“ to your decorations. Surprise your guest with a few chilling effects. Make your Halloween Party Decorations a little special this year. Make sure there will be a few frights and screams.

Obviously you are going to have lots of carved pumpkin jack-o-lanterns to create the atmosphere and subtle lighting. Add a few more painted pumpkins that have a little longer shelf life and can be done a little ahead of the day of your Halloween party, to your Halloween Party Decorations. Let the kids get involved in this. To add more ”scare“ hang a few luminous images of ghosts and ghouls of all kinds and descriptions around the house, not only in the room where the party is. These images can be bought or they can be another craft activity with the kids. Use some gossamer cloth to make your imitations spider webs. Do not only place these in the obvious places but also try and find a few places where they can surprise your guests. This should really make a very good start to creating your haunted atmosphere.

Now you have to start thinking of all the flying and crawling things you are going to add. Make sure you have enough bats, a few flying witches on broom sticks, large hairy spiders and lots of scary Halloween balloons, hanging from the ceiling, as part of your Halloween Party Decorations. Don’t forget to have a few skeletons hanging from the ceiling as well. Make sure you have quite a few surprises for your guests to keep them on edge.

Make sure you have plenty of plastic, hairy spiders to place in unexpected places. Place them where your guests are sitting, amongst the glasses and plates, in the plates with the snacks etc. Make sure you do not place them all before the party, keep some to add when your guests start getting the feeling that they have discovered them all. Do not forget about the passages, the bathroom and the kitchen.

If you hang a number of thin threads from the ceiling in different parts of the room they will not be noticed in the subdued lighting, but will be felt unexpectedly as your guests move around. This can be a surprising sensation, and suggests a ghostly presence that will often get a shrieking reaction from your guests.

Frights come when unexpected things suddenly happen. You could set up a few lights on timers to occasionally briefly illuminate scary scenes or pictures in two or three otherwise dark corners of the room. The effect is increased if you are able to coordinate sound effects to draw attention when the light comes on. Depending on the age group of your guests, you could create a frightening three dimensional scene that is briefly revealed, such as a ghostly headless or hanging man.

Fog machines are readily available from party hire specialists. Used with lighting effects, they will immediately create a chilling and eerie atmosphere in the room as the fog floats across the floor of the room around the feet of your guests. If you can, set up an artificial tombstone or two to conceal the exact location of the machine.

With large screen televisions becoming more common, you could play a horror movie in the background, with the sound turned down, to help to set the scene.

Music plays a large part in creating the atmosphere. At least for the early part of the party, Halloween sound effects and music like the classic Monster Mash will heighten the sense of tension in the room. With the party in full swing later on, your guests will expect to hear their favourite dance music tracks. A compilation interspersing Halloween sound effects would help to maintain the atmosphere.

Even the food and drinks you serve can be part of your Halloween party decorations. Make a punch with a red color and add a few spiders to it. Make snacks with ghostly shapes and ”slimy colors“. Do make normal ones as well though, just in case you have some squeamish guests that wont it the ”slimy“ ones!
